Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23rd. It was created by writer Dan O'Keefe and introduced into popular culture by his son Daniel, a screenwriter for the TV show Seinfeld[1][2] as part of a comical storyline on the show. The holiday's celebration, as shown on Seinfeld, includes an aluminum "Festivus pole", practices such as the "Airing of Grievances" and the "Feats of Strength", and the labeling of easily explainable events as "Festivus miracles".

Celebrants of the holiday sometimes refer to it as "Festivus for the rest of us", a saying taken from the O'Keefe family traditions and popularized in the Seinfeld episode to describe Festivus as "another way" to celebrate the season without participating in its pressures and commercialism.

A great starter on this topic is HipHop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes, a PBS documentary about masculinity in rap and hip hop by a someone who has always loved the music but has come to realize the harmful representations it promotes. Filmaker Byron Hurt breaks it down...

And apparently the phrase "no homo" has caught on in today's rap world. This short video from Current TV pokes fun at the phrase (and the phrase-sayers) while questioning its place in today's world.

Underappreciated anime... ignore the name, please!

Yes, this is an anime for lovers of darker, philosophical fairy tales, theatrical productions, ballet, and classical music. Don't get me wrong, there's a good deal of light-hearted cute-ness, whimsy and cracked out anime humor... but there's more to this 26 episode show than first meets the eye.

The bottom line: Give this one a shot. Really... and rather than reinvent the wheel - I'll quote:

Either this is a very deceptive series or Japanese 10-year-old girls have a taste for the surreal. This is a magical girl series that could have been written by Borges.

Ahiru is a young student at a ballet academy, or perhaps she's a duck (in Japanese: ahiru) dreaming she is a young student at a ballet academy. Or perhaps she's a character in a fairy-tale written by the creepily nutcracker-like Drosselmeier

MIT Anime Club Showing Synopsis

A long time ago there was an anime horribly named Princess Tutu. Men wouldn’t watch it because others would question their sexuality upon doing so, and women wouldn’t watch it because it sounds like it would be little girl’s cartoon. In the end, Princess Tutu would end up being the ugly duckling of anime, forever lost to other anime with awesome titles like ‘Gunslinger Girl’, and ‘Murder Princess’.

However, in most cases a series' title means nothing. For example, you would think an anime called ‘Those Who Hunt Elves’ would be an epic masterpiece featuring Legolas fighting off insane hunters who can shoot 5 bows at once while riding on top of a flying dolphin, etc... but in the end it isn’t that great; not withstanding tanks and breasts. What I’m trying to say is that even if you name an anime Princess Tutu, it can still be epic.

Japanator Review: Princess Tutu

Princess Tutu surprised me. I previously hadn't much opportunity to watch the show and I only had a very small impression to work from. Viewing the series from start to finish was very refreshing and something I wish I had done sooner. Despite the kiddy look and girly design that blankets the show this is truly a series that anyone could sink their teeth into. It's a sweet little treat with a ton of layers that only gets better as you get closer to the last bite. Tutu is a high recommendation!

Seems like someone fronted the money to punch Hollywood in the face (propaganda vs. propaganda) as soon as the U.S.'s botched occupation began in 2003... Based on controversy alone, I want to see this movie. Hey I read The Satanic Verses didn't I?

Valley of the Wolves Iraq (Turkish: Kurtlar Vadisi Irak) is a popular Turkish film from 2006 based on a television series of the same name that has been a hit in Turkey for three seasons. The movie is set in northern Iraq during the Occupation of Iraq and begins with U.S. forces capturing 11 Turkish special forces soldiers. There are some references to other real events such as the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the container shipping incident where prisoners were suffocated and shot was based on true events that occurred in Afghanistan. The film is sometimes referred to as the Turkish Rambo.

Filmed with a budget of $10.2 million Valley of the Wolves is the most expensive Turkish film ever. The film grossed $27.9 million at the box office - $25.1 million in Turkey and $2.8 million in Europe.

Turkey

The film has pulled in record audiences on its release in Turkey, capitalizing on widespread opposition to the Iraq War.^{[citation needed]}
When asked about the factual nature of the scenario, Bülent Arınç, the Chairman of the Turkish Parliament replied "yes, this was exactly as it happened". He called the movie "an extraordinary film that will go into history". ^[4]
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul states that "the film is no worse than some of the productions of Hollywood studios".^[5]
Istanbul Mayor, Kadir Topbaş told the Associated Press that the movie "was very successful — a soldier's honor must never be damaged."^[6]
The reception in the Turkish media was split. Some called it a milestone for the Turkish film industry — others warned the movie might lead to a strengthening of religious extremism. ^[3]
Mehmet Ali Birand, a prominent Turkish columnist and anchorman, said he admired the filmmakers. "They have played with the inner feelings, unsatisfied feelings of Turkish public opinion, and they are making money."^{[citation needed]}

Germany

In Germany, the home of European Union's largest Turkish community, the film was heavily criticized for its alleged racism and antisemitism by several politicians from both the right and left ends of the spectrum of mainstream German politics and in several leading newspapers. As a reviewer in the mainstream Spiegel put it, referring to the film's reliance on a revenge motif, "This wouldn't be so bad if the film didn't portray the opponents of Turks and Muslims so brutally — the bad guys in this black and white world are the Americans, the Kurds, the Christians and the Jews.^[7]

In an interview with Bild am Sonntag on February 19, 2006, Bavarian premier Edmund Stoiber called upon German theatre owners to stop showing Valley of the Wolves. Shortly afterward, Germany's largest cinema chain, CinemaxX, pulled the film, which had been popular among Germany's large Turkish community, from its theatres in response to the criticism from politicians.^[8]

The film won a Bogey Award in Germany.^[9]

Jewish Communities

"The Central council of Jews", a Jewish-German organization, have expressed their opinion that ‘Valley of the Wolves - Iraq’ (Kurtlar Vadisi - Irak) holds antisemitic views, and is racist. They requested German cinemas to stop showing the "film".^{[citation needed]}

United States

The film has received only minor exposure in the United States and is not widely known.^{[citation needed]}

On Comedy Central's The Daily Show, Jon Stewart lampooned Billy Zane and Gary Busey, both American actors, for appearing in the film. During the same segment, several clips were played from American films portraying unidentified terrorists of Muslim, Arab or Middle Eastern extraction. [3]

The U.S. Army recommended that Army personnel overseas not approach cinemas in which the movie is played. [4]

Vicki Roberts, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2399449/, Busey's attorney for the past six years, said "If Gary played a rapist in a movie, would anyone believe him to be an actual rapist? He is an actor, not a politician." When asked about the moral and ethical implications of portraying what could be construed as an anti-Semitic stereotype in a foreign movie, Roberts declined to comment.^[10]

Human beings crave intimacy, need to love and be loved. Yet people have much trouble doing so.

It's clear from the many letters I get that lots of folks have no idea what a healthy relationship even looks like. Because I care about these things, and care about the environments children grow in, I'm using this space as an attempt to remedy the problem—again.

From many sources and many experts, I have culled some basic rules of relationships. This is by no means an exhaustive list. But it's a start. Print them out and pin them up on your refrigerator door. I won't test you on them—but life will.

* Choose a partner wisely and well. We are attracted to people for all kinds of reasons. They remind us of someone from our past. They shower us with gifts and make us feel important. Evaluate a potential partner as you would a friend; look at their character, personality, values, their generosity of spirit, the relationship between their words and actions, their relationships with others.

* Know your partner's beliefs about relationships. Different people have different and often conflicting beliefs about relationships. You don't want to fall in love with someone who expects lots of dishonesty in relationships; they'll create it where it doesn't exist.

* Don't confuse sex with love. Especially in the beginning of a relationship, attraction and pleasure in sex are often mistaken for love.

* Know your needs and speak up for them clearly. A relationship is not a guessing game. Many people, men as well as women, fear stating their needs and, as a result, camouflage them. The result is disappointment at not getting what they want and anger at a partner for not having met their (unstated) needs. Closeness cannot occur without honesty. Your partner is not a mind reader.

* Respect, respect, respect. Inside and outside the relationship, act in ways so that your partner always maintains respect for you. Mutual respect is essential to a good relationship.

* View yourselves as a team, which means you are two unique individuals bringing different perspectives and strengths. That is the value of a team—your differences.

* Know how to manage differences; it's the key to success in a relationship. Disagreements don't sink relationships. Name-calling does. Learn how to handle the negative feelings that are the unavoidable byproduct of the differences between two people. Stonewalling or avoiding conflicts is NOT managing them.

* If you don't understand or like something your partner is doing, ask about it and why he or she is doing it. Talk and explore, don't assume.

* Solve problems as they arise. Don't let resentments simmer. Most of what goes wrong in relationships can be traced to hurt feelings, leading partners to erect defenses against one another and to become strangers. Or enemies.

* Learn to negotiate. Modern relationships no longer rely on roles cast by the culture. Couples create their own roles, so that virtually every act requires negotiation. It works best when good will prevails. Because people's needs are fluid and change over time, and life's demands change too, good relationships are negotiated and renegotiated all the time.

* Listen, truly listen, to your partner's concerns and complaints without judgment. Much of the time, just having someone listen is all we need for solving problems. Plus it opens the door to confiding. And empathy is crucial. Look at things from your partner's perspective as well as your own.

* Work hard at maintaining closeness. Closeness doesn't happen by itself. In its absence, people drift apart and are susceptible to affairs. A good relationship isn't an end goal; it's a lifelong process maintained through regular attention.

* Take a long-range view. A marriage is an agreement to spend a future together. Check out your dreams with each other regularly to make sure you're both on the same path. Update your dreams regularly.

* Never underestimate the power of good grooming.

* Sex is good. Pillow talk is better. Sex is easy, intimacy is difficult. It requires honesty, openness, self-disclosure, confiding concerns, fears, sadnesses as well as hopes and dreams.

* Never go to sleep angry. Try a little tenderness.

* Apologize, apologize, apologize. Anyone can make a mistake. Repair attempts are crucial—highly predictive of marital happiness. They can be clumsy or funny, even sarcastic—but willingness to make up after an argument is central to every happy marriage.

* Some dependency is good, but complete dependency on a partner for all one's needs is an invitation to unhappiness for both partners. We're all dependent to a degree—on friends, mentors, spouses. This is true of men as well as women.

* Maintain self-respect and self-esteem. It's easier for someone to like you and to be around you when you like yourself. Research has shown that the more roles people fill, the more sources of self-esteem they have. Meaningful work—paid or volunteer—has long been one of the most important ways to exercise and fortify a sense of self.

* Enrich your relationship by bringing into it new interests from outside the relationship. The more passions in life that you have and share, the richer your relationship will be. It is unrealistic to expect one person to meet all of your needs in life.

* Cooperate, cooperate, cooperate. Share responsibilities. Relationships work ONLY when they are two-way streets, with much give and take.

* Stay open to spontaneity.

* Maintain your energy. Stay healthy.

* Recognize that all relationships have their ups and downs and do not ride at a continuous high all the time. Working together through the hard times will make the relationship stronger.

* Make good sense of a bad relationship by examining it as a reflection of your beliefs about yourself. Don't just run away from a bad relationship; you'll only repeat it with the next partner. Use it as a mirror to look at yourself, to understand what in you is creating this relationship. Change yourself before you change your relationship.

* Understand that love is not an absolute, not a limited commodity that you're in of or out of. It's a feeling that ebbs and flows depending on how you treat each other. If you learn new ways to interact, the feelings can come flowing back, often stronger than before.

ENFJs are, by definition, Js, with whom we associate organization and decisiveness. But they don't resemble the SJs or even the NTJs in organization of the environment nor occasional recalcitrance. ENFJs are organized in the arena of interpersonal affairs. Their offices may or may not be cluttered, but their conclusions (reached through feelings) about people and motives are drawn much more quickly and are more resilient than those of their NFP counterparts.

ENFJs know and appreciate people. Like most NFs, (and Feelers in general), they are apt to neglect themselves and their own needs for the needs of others. They have thinner psychological boundaries than most, and are at risk for being hurt or even abused by less sensitive people. ENFJs often take on more of the burdens of others than they can bear.

I'm so going this year. From what I've heard so far... I'm most excited for Erykah Badu, People under the stairs and Ayo (Jam Day). I'm not the hugest fan of dancehall which seems to comprise most of the Reggae day lineup :\ ...more traditional reggae for me.

The rumors of Serenity sequels keep rumbling, and at the same time those in the know need to put to rest such crazy, unrealistic notions.

Okay, the (mostly grounded in reality) fans are grudgingly coming to terms. Get real, there is no more. Be happy with what you have in your Firefly and Serenity DVDs, move on already. No studio is going to back a project that lost money at the box office last time, and making up for your loss in DVD sales is Plan B, not Plan A.

Yet... Joss' eyes and nose continue to have that 'yes-iness' about them. Or put in less crazy talk, he'd jump at the chance to continue the 'Verse if a studio knocked on his door, rang his telephone, accosted him in a restaurant, or twittered him. (The twittering somehow sounds dirty, but he'll take what we can get.)

So what's on the 'plus' side of continuing the 'Verse? ~

1. Joss would continue Firefly/Serenity in a heartbeat.
2. The cast would LOVE to work together again, and they'd be there on the second beat.
3. The crew even want to get on board, and that's sayin' somethin'.
4. There are far more FF/S fans now than there were when Serenity was released. The movie itself, and continuing strong sales of FF/S DVDs, have made, and are always making, new fans, so a new incarnation of Firefly/Serenity would have a much bigger audience than 3 years ago.
5. Many of the cast are gaining a great deal more fame and popularity. There could come a time very soon when some of cast together in a movie would go a long way to getting studio financing based a great deal on their names alone.

So what's holding up continuing the 'Verse? ~

As always, the money, and the legal copyright holding thingy too. Which means studio backing is needed, and they need a very real prospect of making a decent profit. Otherwise, a studio ain't gonna play.

What would prompt a studio to play? ~

Profit! Lots of people paying lots of money to see more of FF/S. Find a way to maintain quality and keep production costs reasonable, and the prospect of profit starts to look realistic. It's always going to come down to an audience large enough to make the venture worth the investment.

As always, since the beginning, it still hasn't changed... a bigger audience which will pay to see more of FF/S is what will make it happen.

So we come to the title of the thread: Guerilla Marketing and Paying the Rent.

Guerilla Marketing ~

Plenty of us already know very well what this is, most likely we've already tapped every friend, family member, co-worker, car mechanic, hair dresser, etc., that we know in our efforts to spread the word. But there's always new folk to reach, and we're in a marathon, not a sprint. Guerilla marketing doesn't have to be a hard sell or something complicated, it can be as simple as carrying the FF/S mini-posters and/or bookmarks with you, leaving them where folks can find them, or giving them out when a conversation turns to Firefly/Serenity (note: always try to find a way to work FF/S into your conversations).

One thing about spreading the word though, avoid scaring those you wish to attract. As some well-meaning, but way over-enthusiastic, browncoats have earned infamy as obnoxious fans it's important not to get so caught up in excitement over talking about FF/S so that one takes on a wide eyed, hyper attitude, and comes off as a nut who just found a new religion... and *gasp* wants to gather more converts. A real fast turn-off with that approach. Most likely far more anti-FF/S fans will be created that way, so please avoid crazed, pushy, fan behavior, your fellow browncoats will thank you. And remember, no matter how hard to believe, there will always be some folks who will never warm up to FF/S no matter what what you say, or perhaps *because* of what you say. Accept that they are tetched in the head, or at least one of you is, and move on to greener pastures...

What's this "Paying the Rent"? ~

I'm talking about paying the rent HERE. This message board. We get to use this place for free, and our sponsor is FOX Home Entertainment. They pay the expense of keeping this forum going, so one very good way to give back is to continue keeping a fire under our energies to promote the Firefly DVD. Profits from the sales of the DVD help justify keeping the board going. The fact that this place is the original message board for Firefly, and literally contains the history of the show and our fandom through an incredible record of posts doesn't necessarily mean this place is invulnerable to an "off" switch. I'd like to think that the continuing strong sales of the Firefly DVD and other licensed products are what help justify our existence, or maybe we have friends in high places who hold this board as something special worth preserving. In any event, it would be good for us to do our parts and keep up with the guerilla marketing efforts and help earn our keep. I know that some great promotional work is being done at the conventions, and many of us are always ready to spread the word, but it would also help to post about it too. Seeing the work continue is encouraging, and helps us get a little more motivated to pick up the effort if we've been lapsing into disillusion. Plus, if FHE is watching, it would be a nice way to say "thank you" to them for keeping this place going.

On a similar note, it'd be good to try to keep the 'General Firefly Discussion' threads more active. I know it may seem like we've already discussed just about everything there is to say about Firefly, but let's try to come up with some new thoughts. Plus, when responding, try to put in a bit more effort than one sentence or so. Otherwise, that section is gonna keep having tumbleweeds blowing through it, and that does tend to make the board look like it's not a Firefly board any more. I doubt FOX Home Entertainment is especially interested in paying for our political or personal threads.

I know I don't post as much as I used to. Mostly this has been due to being busy beyond the telling of it... deadlines that don't even allow me to go to bed sometimes. But I do check in every day and post when I can and there's something relevant to add, and I will try to do my part to keep the Firefly, Joss and Cast threads active, because those threads are at the core of this "Firefly" board. By the way, this is the first chance I've had to write this much in months, so I guess I've been saving up my thoughts... heh...

Gee, I wonder how many folks will actually read all of this? hmmmm....

In all honesty, it's a good thing this keeps having to be said. It's a testament to the greatness of the Firefly / Serenity 'verse that it keeps gaining fans wherever it goes, even SEVEN YEARS AFTER it was first aired.

FOR NEWBIES COMING HERE WITH SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING FOR FF/S:

You should understand that the regulars on this board were doing write in campaigns five years ago when Firefly was still on the air and also when Joss tried to get another network to run Firefly. The once again when Universal was seriously considering the making of a movie.

They were getting people they knew hooked on the show with the episodes they had on videotape, before there even was a DVD set.

They organized the first shindigs, set up Firefly Booths at conventions and asked convention organizers to invite Firefly guests before there were dedicated FF/S conventions.

They have run more campaigns than I can count to raise money for many different causes, just because they could.

They created their own guerrilla marketing campaigns to get the word out, cause no one else was going to do it.

They got an full page ad placed in Variety thanking Fox and the sponsors. (Thanks to Allyson, KibaRika and Kristen, who probably don't think we still remember their contributions. We do!!! They were the first fan organizers & are still the best!! :)

They created their own merchandise (T-shirts, hats, buttons, etc.) because no company offered them.

After the DVD's came out, they showed them to anyone they knew that might have an interest in the show.

They wrote reviews at any website or magazine that would let them.

They ran a campaign to put AT LEAST one copy of the Firefly DVD set on every ship in the US Navy with a library - along with FF posters for the libraries.

They bought many, many copies of the DVD's to give as gifts to people.

They created Firefly artwork, filk songs, fan fic, costumes and websites to celebrate the series. They took tho things to cons & made FF related events some of the most popular.

So perhaps you can understand why they might not appreciate being told what they should and should not do to promote the series and movie.
